Start with the real workflow
Design around what planners, engineers, districts, and land managers actually need to accomplish.
About the founder
Casey Faust founded ContourStack to make technically rigorous conservation planning faster, more accessible, and easier to carry from a field boundary to a defensible decision.
01 / The path to ContourStack
Casey holds a B.S. in Ecology and attended Penn State University for his master's education in Geographic Information Systems. That combination of environmental science and geospatial technology grounds his approach to conservation software.
His work has consistently centered on one question: why should a necessary technical process take longer than it has to?
While working with USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service offices in Pennsylvania, he saw how conservation professionals often spend hours locating, assembling, checking, and transferring information before meaningful planning can begin. His work included developing a GIS-based Natural Resources Inventory workflow that reduced repetitive effort and made the process easier for others to use.
That experience shaped the idea behind ContourStack. Instead of treating erosion analysis, nutrient accounting, terrain review, engineering preparation, and field records as disconnected tasks, Casey began building a platform that could bring them together in one traceable workflow.
02 / How the work is approached
TerrainLogic reflects a practical development philosophy: preserve scientific traceability, expose limitations honestly, and remove unnecessary work from the professional using the tool.
Design around what planners, engineers, districts, and land managers actually need to accomplish.
Document sources, validation, assumptions, and boundaries so a result can be understood and reviewed.
Keep the platform local-first and efficient enough to run on practical Windows field computers.
Use beta feedback to improve the details that determine whether software works outside a demonstration.
"I am motivated by solving problems, making work more efficient, and turning technical processes into tools that nontechnical users can confidently operate."
Casey Faust
03 / What came next
Casey developed the modeling workflows, desktop interface, validation framework, reporting system, installation process, field-history architecture, and preliminary conservation-engineering tools behind TerrainLogic. He has tested it across diverse locations and management systems while maintaining public documentation of what the evidence supports and where professional review remains essential.
ContourStack is now working with conservation professionals, researchers, engineers, districts, and land managers to evaluate TerrainLogic in real planning environments and shape what comes next.
